INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A retired sheriff’s K-9 credited with sniffing out nearly two kilograms of cocaine during a traffic stop has passed away, deputies said.

Nacho, 12, who retired in 2014 after nearly eight years of service at the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, was recently laid to rest because of health issues. The German Shepherd remained a loyal part of the family of his partner, Sgt. Pat White, after retirement.

While serving as a K-9, Nacho helped Sgt. White and K-9 deputy Christian Mathisen seize cocaine that was well-hidden under a vehicle during a traffic stop and could have been easily overlooked.

“Nacho thought otherwise and made sure his human partner knew there was something bad in that truck,” Sheriff’s officials said. “This is just one of the many times Nacho helped keep drugs off our streets and out of the hands of our kids.”

The Sheriff’s Office thanked Nacho for outstanding service. Sgt. White was not immediately available for comment.
