Biker who hit deputy before high-speed chase charged

A 25-year-old motorcyclist who struck an Indian River Sheriff’s deputy and then led law enforcement officials on a high speed chase into St. Lucie County was charged Monday for the incidents, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

Zachary Daniel Marcinek was charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, trespassing, failure to register to vehicle, resisting an officer and fleeing and eluding an officer at high speed.

He is being held at the St. Lucie County Jail until he is transferred to the Indian River County Jail; his bond is set at $51,875.

Details on if the female passenger on the motorcycle was also arrested were not available.

The incident started about 5:52 p.m. Sunday evening in the 9900 block of U.S. 1. Deputy Ron Adamson was patrolling a subdivision on foot when he saw two people – a man and woman – on a motorcycle, according to the Indian River Sheriff’s Office.

The pair fled on the motorcycle when Adamson motioned and called to them to stop. The motorcycle struck the deputy, causing him to fall to the ground, deputies said.

The motorcycle then led deputies on a high speed chase on southbound Interstate 95. A pursuit ensued, involving the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, the Fellsmere Police Department and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, as well as a law enforcement helicopter.

The pursuit reached speeds of up to 130 mph, according to the Indian River Sheriff’s Office. The helicopter was able to keep track of the motorcycle.
