Roughly 120 brave souls accepted the challenge to “Get off your ass and save some seagrass!” as participants in the fifth annual Capt. Hiram’s River Challenge Sprint Triathlon.
Greeted by a gorgeous sunrise and enthusiastically cheered along the way by spectators lining the route, the triathletes dashed into the Indian River Lagoon from the beach at Capt. Hiram’s Resort for a 1/4-mile swim before sprinting to their bikes for the 12-mile bike ride and finishing up with a 5K run along Indian River Drive.
In addition to raising awareness of issues facing our once-pristine waters, proceeds from the event benefited the Coastal Conservation Association, Environmental Learning Center and Ocean Research and Conservation Association. Ramses Rodriguez was overall winner with a time of 59:08 and Abigail Garner was top female finisher at 1:05:48.
