INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 14-year-old middle school student is accused of punching a teacher after the student was involved in an altercation with another student, Indian River County deputies said.
The middle schooler was charged with battery on school personnel and resisting arrest with violence. Details on if the student is currently being held at the Indian River County Jail or the St. Lucie Regional Juvenile Detention Center were not immediately available.
Shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday, a deputy acting as the school resource officer was assigned to Oslo Middle School, 480 20th Ave. S.W. The deputy heard over the radio that help was needed in the 8th grade wing.
The deputy went to the wing and saw a teacher trying to hold a student that was attempting to get away, deputies said. The deputy and assistant principal repeatedly told the student to calm down, but he refused and was pushing the deputy in order to flee.
The student was “taken to the ground” by the deputy, handcuffed and taken to the office. While being escorted to the office, the student tried to pull away from the deputy multiple times and said “**** the police, I’m going to have my brother kill your ***,” deputies said.
The deputy was able to get the student inside the office and then spoke with a teacher who was with a nurse. The teacher had red marks on the side of her face consistent with being punched and had ice because of the swelling.
The teacher told the deputy there was an altercation between the first (detained) student and a second student. The teacher said when she tried to keep the other student away from the first student, the first student walked up behind her and punched her in the face.
The middle schooler was taken into custody.
