INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Commuters on Florida’s Turnpike and State Road 60 might see smoke billowing from an authorized burn in western Indian River County.
A landowner was authorized to burn 50 acres of vegetation from 8 a.m. until sunset Tuesday on their property, said Florida Forest Service spokeswoman Melissa Yunas. The agricultural area is in western Indian River County, just east of Florida’s Turnpike and south of S. R. 60.
These authorized burns help to prevent wildfires and reduce hazardous materials in the field, including sticks, twigs and other fire accelerants left behind from Hurricane Irma debris.
“Today’s a beautiful day to burn. It’s not too hot or dry, and it’s not too windy,” Yunas said.
Residents should remove overgrown vegetation before it becomes fuel for wildfire.
