VERO BEACH — A local high school recently received three prestigious sports awards in recognition of its athletic programs, school officials said.
The awards were given to Vero Beach High School to highlight athletic success and sportsman like conduct. The school of “Fighting Indians” is located at 1707 16th Street.
The first award is the Cary E. McDonald Award for the Class 9A Athletic Program of the Year, presented by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association. This award is given to recognize the most successful athletic program in state.
The school also received the Florida High School Athletic Association’s Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Award in two categories – Boys Class 9A and Class 9A overall, school officials said. Points are given to a school based on its finish in the FHSAA State Series competition in each sport with subtractions for any school, team or individual rule violation.
“There are many great athletic programs in Florida and to be recognized as the most successful speaks volumes for all involved,” said Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Lenny Jankowski. “Our coaches and student-athletes continue to work extremely hard on and off the field and on and off the court. They put in countless hours and make us proud daily.”
Principal Shawn O’Keefe said he’s extremely proud of the student athletes and athletic programs at the high school.
“Hard work and dedication are attributes of our entire VBHS school culture, and the success of our athletic programs is an outstanding reflection of our school.”
