VERO BEACH — A home is uninhabitable after flames ignited inside, causing heavy fire and smoke damage throughout the residence, an Indian River County Fire Rescue official said.
Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 1600 block of 24th Avenue, Vero Beach. The home is south of 20th Street and east of 27th Avenue.
Nobody was home when the fire began and details on if anyone lives at the home were not available.
Crews extinguished the fire shortly before 1:30 p.m., Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Brian Burkeen said. But, the fire caused heavy smoke and flame damage throughout most of the home.
To prevent motorists from driving near the home, Vero Beach Police officers temporarily closed off 16th Street between 20th Avenue and 27th Avenue and 24th Avenue between 16th Street and 20th Street. 16th Street reopened about 2:30 p.m. and 24th Avenue reopened shortly before 4 p.m., police spokeswoman Anna Carden said.
No other homes were threatened from the flames and the cause of the fire is under investigation, Burkeen said.
