INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Heavy downpours of showers and thunderstorms could bring localized flooding to the county, according to the Emergency Services Department.
The National Weather Service in Melbourne issued out an areal flood advisory for northeast Indian River County about 8 p.m. Friday. The advisory is in effect until 9 p.m. and minor flooding of urban areas is expected.
Residents should expect to see storms with gusty winds and lightning throughout the weekend and most of next week.
Average rainfall will be up to 1 inch with localized amounts of up to 3 inches. This could cause more localized flooding, especially in areas where there already is standing water, officials said.
There’s also a possibility of 30 to 40 mph wind gusts in some of the stronger storms. Residents should be aware that there is a high risk for dangerous rip currents at local beaches.
Hurricane season doesn’t end until Nov. 30, so residents should stay prepared.

- Move indoors if skies look threatening or you hear thunder.
- Be prepared to take action to protect your property and never drive into areas where water covers the road.
- Always swim in the presence of a lifeguard.
Stay prepared and do the following:
- Restock your hurricane kit.
- Have your evacuation plan ready.
- Know what you and your family will do if residents find themselves scrambling to escape another storm.
