INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – In 2015, a bill was signed into law requiring Florida’s Division of Elections to develop and implement an online voter registration system by October 2017. Florida will join the list of 35 states and the District of Columbia that already offer an online voter registration option.
The new online process will supplement the traditional paper-based system. In place of a paper application, voters will be able to complete and submit their voter registration application via the internet. To be eligible to register to vote online, a person must have either a Florida-issued driver’s license or identification card. The signature that is already on file with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is the same signature that will be used for the person’s voter registration record.
“Florida’s online voter registration website includes several security measures to help ensure the identity of the voter is true and accurate, while also protecting a voter’s personal information, such as requiring additional fields of information that only the registrant should know,” explained Maria Matthews, Director of Florida’s Division of Elections in an email to Election Supervisors.
“We look forward to implementing the new online voter registration program. Online registration will streamline the process by eliminating common errors with registration applications, such as missing information and discrepancies due to interpreting illegible handwriting,” said Indian River County Supervisor of Elections, Leslie Swan.
