INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — To help schools with the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, students will now have free breakfast and lunch through Oct. 20, according to the School District of Indian River County.
The free meals, which began Monday, are part of and provided by the United States Department of Agriculture’s National School Lunch Program, which will impact more than 1,800 schools and 1.4 million children in Florida.
Schools and facilities in the county are allowed to temporarily serve meals that do not meet the menu planning or meal pattern requirements through Oct. 20, officials said. The agency also is providing flexibility regarding when kids can be fed because of food preparation challenges caused by Hurricane Irma.
