Rip Current advisory through 8 p.m.

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY –Indian River County remains under a rip current advisory through 8 p.m. Monday. The National Weather Service extended the advisory, which was due to expire Sunday night.

The agency continues to warn those on the east coast to stay out of the water as Hurricane Jose passed near enough to cause building swells, rough surf and dangerous rip currents.

According to the weather agency, large breaking waves are building to six and seven feet in the surf zone through this afternoon. The high surf will pose a hazard to those who attempt to brave a swim.

Numerous rip currents are expected to form, especially during the outgoing tides, the National Weather Service said.

“Rough pounding surf could easily knock you off your feet and make you even more susceptible to the seaward pull of a rip current,” the agency said.
