Quail Valley Club founder dies

VERO BEACH — Steve Mulvey, the majority owner and CEO of Quail Valley Golf & River Club in Vero Beach, has died from “complications from his stroke in July,” according to an email sent to the club’s members Wednesday night. He was 65.

The email, written by Quail Valley General Manager Kevin Given, said Mulvey was with his wife, Kathy, along with other family members and friends during his final hours in Rye, N.Y.

“Our Quail Valley team is hurting and no words can properly express our sadness in Steve’s passing,” Given wrote. “Our team is committed to honoring Steve’s legacy by committing ourselves to keeping his spirit alive at Quail Valley.”

The Quail Valley Golf Club opened Jan. 21, 2002, and in 2003, Mulvey and Given bought the old Riomar Bay Yacht Club and opened the Quail Valley River Club in 2004. Then, in November 2014, Mulvey and Given bought the property on which the Lobster Shanty rested and a year ago added a third campus — Quail Valley at the Pointe.

The Mulveys retained a home in Rye, but he spent most of his time in Vero Beach.

“Steve was the visionary and driving force behind the creation and development of Quail Valley,” Given wrote. “Much of our success and prominence in the private club industry was due to his passion, focus, determination and overall leadership.”

Funeral services are still being planned.
