Sunday midday tour of island finds little damage

VERO BEACH — A heavy surf came up to the edge of the dune line at high tide Sunday noon, but little erosion damage has yet occurred along the Vero Beach oceanfront.

A couple dozen young people braved one of the many rain squalls buffeting the island, and gathered at Sexton Plaza to watch the huge waves crashing just offshore.

A half mile farther north, the high-tide waves nibbled at the sand that was recently replenished under the Conn Beach boardwalk.

Elsewhere around the island, there were pools of standing water in spots that tend to flood during heavy rains, but none of the major roads in Central Beach were impassable.

While there were a number of palm fronds and oak twigs littering roads in residential areas, no serious damage was observed on a half-hour midday tour of the Central Beach area.

At noon, the bridges to the island were ordered closed due to the threat of higher tropical storm force winds in the afternoon.
