INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Schools in the county will remain closed through Tuesday as officials assess any damage that might have been caused by Hurricane Irma.
Irma, a Category 4 Hurricane with 130 mph winds, made landfall on the west coast of Florida Sunday afternoon. Schools here closed last Thursday and Friday in preparation for the hurricane, which at one point was expected to come much closer to Vero.
A decision on when schools will reopen will not be made until damage assessments at all school buildings are complete and when officials are confident normal operations can resume.
“We need to make sure that all of our schools are safe and ready for use. That includes having electrical power, and water and plumbing services restored,” said District Superintendent Mark Rendell. “After Hurricane Irma passes, we will physically inspect all of our facilities to assess damage and determine the condition of readiness.”
The District has also taken into account that many families have evacuated because of the hurricane, and that evacuees will need some time to safely return to the area before schools reopen.
