VERO BEACH — Northbound traffic on Interstate 95 is heavy from commuters trying to flee the area before hurricane Irma makes landfall, according to police.
The heavy traffic is south of State Road 60. There also is heavy northbound traffic south of the Yeehaw Junction on Florida’s Turnpike.
Those planning to evacuate should check the routes and be safe.
On Thursday, Irma remained a strong hurricane with 175 mph winds, slightly lower than Wednesday, when it had 185 mph winds, according to weather meteorologists. The storm was headed for the Turks and Caicos Islands and is expected to bring significant damage to the area on Sunday and Monday.
Hurricane Jose, following Irma, is expected to become a major hurricane by Friday. Jose had 90 mph winds Thursday.
