INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Hurricane Irma remained a strong Category 5 hurricane with 185 mph winds Wednesday as it traveled west over the Atlantic Ocean.
Irma was 1,160 miles from Florida on Wednesday and was passing over the northernmost Virgin Islands, according to the Indian River County Emergency Services Department and National Hurricane Center. It’s traveling northwest at 16 mph.
In addition to charter and private schools being closed Thursday and Friday, the Indian River County Courthouse also will be closed on those same days, officials said. The county government offices also will be closed Friday because of the forthcoming weather conditions.
