Fake Facebook pages, tweets and charity websites are asking for donations to Hurricane Harvey relief funds, according to the Indian River County Emergency Services Department.
Some examples include Facebook pages dedicated to victim relief that have links to scam websites, tweets with links to charitable websites soliciting donations that are actually spam links and phishing emails asking for donations to the Hurricane Harvey relief fund.
The department urges residents to not fall for any of these scams. It also suggests residents go to the website of the charity of their choice to make a donation and to not click on any links sent in emails or texts.
Hurricane Harvey swept through the Texas Gulf Coast over the weekend and weakened to a tropical storm Saturday. It caused massive flooding in Houston, claimed at least 14 lives and is headed east toward Louisiana.
