Former Vero Beach resident dies in hiking accident in Colorado.

COLORADO — A former Vero Beach man and his girlfriend died after falling from a mountain in Colorado.

Ryan Marcil, 26, and his girlfriend, Carlin Brightwell, 27, both of Aspen, were reported missing Sunday and found dead Tuesday afternoon at the base of the north face of Capitol Peak near Aspen, according to media reports.

Shortly before 11 a.m. Aug. 21, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office got a call about two hikers in the Capitol Creek drainage being overdue on their return. The couple planned to return to Aspen sometime on Aug. 20 after climbing Capitol Peak the same day.

Officials began searching for the two when they did not return on Monday, deputies said. Mountain Rescue Aspen volunteers, a CareFlight helicopter and a National Guard helicopter helped with the search.

About 2:30 p.m. Aug. 22, the National Guard helicopter spotted the two climbers at the bottom of the north face of the mountain. Rescuers were able to reach the climbers and confirmed both were dead.

Marcil previously attended St. Edward’s School in Vero Beach.
