VERO BEACH – Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century. In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums. On Sunday, Aug. 27, the Space Coast Symphony JAZZ Orchestra will celebrate the centennial of her birth with A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald at 3 p.m. at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center, 1707 16th St.
Under the direction of Stetson University’s Dr. Patrick Hennessey, the JAZZ Orchestra’s swinging tribute will feature some of the most glorious songs Ella made famous, including “Blues in the Night” and “They Can’t Take That Away from Me.”
Vocalist Linda Cole, a jazz great in her own right and also known as “Central Florida’s First Lady of Song,” joins the Space Coast Symphony JAZZ Orchestra to pay tribute to Ella. Originally from Illinois, Linda Cole began singing at age three as part of The Singing Coles. She is related to the famed jazz pianist and singer from Illinois, Nat “King” Cole.
During A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, the audience will also hear top hits from Nat King Cole and jazz legend, Billie Holiday.
Advance tickets are $20 for adults and are available through the orchestra website at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org or at Marine Bank & Trust (beachside and mainland branches). Tickets at the door are $25.
The concert is free for those aged 18 and under or with a student ID.
