VERO BEACH – Farce, romance and jealousy abound when the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra and Orlando Light Opera collaborate in an updated production of Franz Lehar’s famed operetta, “The Merry Widow.” Multiple Central Florida performances include a single Indian River County showing at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center, 1707 16th St.
Lehar’s music sparkles in this English language production, staged and reimagined for the new millennium. Directed by Eric Pinder and conducted by Aaron T. Collins, The Merry Widow will please fans of the classic operetta and garner new admirers along the way.
The Merry Widow is an example of the collaboration that characterizes the 2017-18 season of the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra. Conductor and Artistic Director, Aaron T. Collins enjoys the synergy created by the two groups and the updated twist on the musical classic. In 2016, Collins won the Richard A. Stark Award for cultural leadership from the Cultural Council of Indian River County.
“We are delighted to be presenting some of Florida’s finest voices in this production,” said Collins. “The cast is crazy talented and Lehar’s music is of course timeless. The reimagined story is set in the current era and in English to make it more accessible to modern audiences, but fans of the classic operetta will definitely not be disappointed.”
Advance tickets are $20 for adults and are available through the orchestra website at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org or at Marine Bank & Trust (beachside and mainland branches). Tickets at the door are $25. The concert is free for those aged 18 and under or with a student ID.
