FELLSMERE — Fellsmere police are warning residents to be aware of a scam involving a fundraiser for officers that have been severely injured or killed while on duty.

The police department said it received a robocall last night from the Florida Police Officers Association about the fundraiser drive. The call said the association was having a fundraiser for “the families of officers killed in the line of duty” or “officers who have suffered a severe loss because of violence or injury.”

The number that called was 850-203-5920. Police contacted the association about the call and learned that it’s part of a statewide imposter scam.

Complaints about the scam already have been reported to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the state agency that regulates telemarketers in Florida.

Anyone who gets a call and would like to file a complaint can do so at the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services site. Those who don’t want to receive any robocalls can register their numbers at Florida’s “Do not call” program at the consumer services site.

They also can register their numbers at the Federal Trade Commission’s “Do not call” registry.
