VERO BEACH – A deputy who shot a woman after she tried to cut him with a butcher knife has been identified as Jonathan Lozada, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Lozada is a five-year veteran and was put on administrative leave after the incident.

On Wednesday, Lozada responded to a call of a woman attempting suicide about 8 p.m. at a home in the 600 block of Carriage Lake Way, Vero Beach. When Lozada ran up the stairs in the home to save Susan Teel, she lunged at him with a butcher knife, sheriff’s officials said.

Lozada shot Teel and she was pronounced dead at the scene, sheriff’s officials said. The number of times Teel was shot was not immediately available.
