The Melbourne Beach Fire Department responded to a propane gas leak in an underground tank at a house on Pelican Key in the Harbor East neighborhood on June 28. Como Oil and Propane of Vero Beach discovered the leak at the filler assembly valve while filling the tank.
The leak resulted from a cracked fitting which had to be changed.
“We were there in a supporting role,” said Deputy Chief Gavin Brown. The fire department stood by in case an unexpected reaction occurred.
“We also warned residents what was going on,” Brown said.
He said Como took care that there was no further hazard as they pumped the gas out of the tank and into the truck. “They were in charge of the situation. These things normally go smoothly,” Brown said.
There were no injuries or evacuations of the single-family home area. Como Oil and Propane declined comment on the incident.
