VERO BEACH — A 46-year-old man was recently arrested after deputies said he stabbed his girlfriend in the thigh during an argument, according to an Indian River County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

John Scott Shay, of the 5300 block of 16th Street, Vero Beach, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was released Sunday from the Indian River County Jail on $25,000 bail.

Shortly before 9 a.m.  June 23, deputies received a call from Shay’s girlfriend who showed them a deep cut on her right thigh with about 30 stitches, the report states. The woman told deputies that she and Shay fight constantly and have been dating for about two and a half years.

She said about 5:30 a.m. June 9, the two got into an argument at their home, the report states. The woman said she then took a shower, got out and got dressed when they began to argue again.

When she walked into the kitchen and saw Shay holding a steak knife, the woman ran to the bathroom and locked the door. She said Shay kicked open the door and was still holding the knife, the report states.

When she tried to run around him, Shay stabbed her in her right thigh. She said Shay then drove her to Indian River Medical Center for treatment, where she received the stitches, the report states.

The woman told deputies she didn’t come to them sooner because she didn’t want Shay to go to prison, the report states.

Shortly before 5 p.m. June 23, deputies detained Shay at his home and booked him into the Indian River County Jail.
