(BPT) – Spring is in full swing. If you’ve been waiting to make updates to your home, this is the perfect time for a refresh. Whether you’re looking to completely renovate a room or make small décor changes, Linda Crisolo, design expert and merchandising director at Art.com, helps navigate the boldest trends of the season.
1. Modern metallics
Add hints of rose gold, brushed bronze or gunmetal to update your space and add glamour in a modern way. “Modern metallics are popularly seen in kitchen lighting or cabinet hardware. However, if you’re looking for less permanent ways to incorporate metallic accents into your home, try candle holders, bowls and home accessories,” Crisolo says. To avoid going overboard, keep the overall room palette neutral and stick to the same color metal. Opting for different finishes (polished, brushed, gold leaf, etc.) is also a good way to prevent metal accents from overpowering a room.
2. Get thrifty
Hit up your local thrift store for unique vintage finds and low-cost, mid-century accent pieces. “The best part about thrift store finds is that they’re often one-of-a-kind,” Crisolo says. “I love stumbling upon first edition books and vintage bowls, which are perfect for styling a shelf or a nightstand.” Crisolo’s tip: Don’t let an outdated fabric or color deter you from buying items at a thrift store. If the shape is right and the item is built well, reupholstering or a fresh coat of paint can make all the difference.
3. Jungalow chic
One of the most Instagram-worthy trends of the season, jungalow chic brings the relaxed boho vibes of Tulum, Mexico right into your home. Add tropical leaf prints or an accent pillow to instantly liven up a drab room. If you’re looking to make a big statement, opt for this banana leaf print wallpaper. Added bonus? “They’re self-adhesive and easily removable, so you can switch things up from season to season,” Crisolo says.
4. Hyped up hues
While decorating your walls is an easy way to transform your space, people forget to maximize other vantage points in a room like the ceilings or doors. “Most people think ceilings should be left white, but adding the right pop of color can really transform a room,” Crisolo says. “Choose a color that’s similar to the walls, or opt for removable wallpaper with an eye-catching print.” Want to impress your guests before they even enter the room? Paint your door in an unexpected shade, like this season’s popular millennial pink or aqua blue.
5. Experiment with interesting textures
Mix and match different textures throughout your home to keep things visually interesting. Marble and agate, resin and unfinished wood and leather and hide are unique textures that can add depth to a room. “Keeping to the same color family or opting for muted tones will help prevent items from clashing aesthetically,” Crisolo says.
