The fun-filled 14th annual Moorings Habitat Classic Weekend culminated last Monday evening as The Moorings Yacht & Country Club hosted a gala Habi-Cocktail Party to celebrate the success of another great event to benefit Indian River Habitat for Humanity. Proceeds from the fundraiser will enable the nonprofit to build three new houses.
The three-day event kicked off on Friday with a Hab-A-Heart Shopping Day at The Village Shops, and continued through the weekend, where attendees participated in a 5K run, walk and bike event as well as bridge, golf and tennis tournaments.
“We added new events this year to broaden the appeal and coverage for club and Moorings members,” said event co-chair Heidi Sommers. On Friday, members enjoyed an afternoon of croquet, champagne and sweets at Hawks Nest, and on Saturday a mahjong luncheon joined the lineup for those who wanted to challenge their mental fitness.
On Monday evening, more than 450 guests enjoyed cocktails and perused auction items before heading into the Royal Palm Room for a spectacular dinner buffet, complete with a raw bar, carving, pasta and dessert stations.
“We have been a part of Habitat for years because we believe in what they do. They make such an impact on so many lives,” said Shirley Becker, whose family came out in full force to support the organization, all wearing their trademark Kelly green.
“We are so fortunate to have members who work alongside staff ensuring our charitable programs make the biggest impact whenever and wherever possible,” said Ursula Gunter, Moorings director of membership and marketing.
This year’s event, under the chairmanship of Heidi and David Sommers, netted more than $200,000. The Sommers were assisted by co-chairs Kent and Ann Seeley, who will assume the position of lead chairs for 2018.
“Habitat is a very effective charity,” explained Heidi Sommers, adding that they were also involved with Habitat when they lived in Massachusetts. “Over 90 percent of the money goes to the actual end recipient. It is a very efficient model and directly touches families.”
“In 1999, members of The Moorings Yacht & Country Club became the first private country club to form a committee to recruit volunteers and raise funds to support Indian River Habitat for Humanity programs. They also generously shared their successful ideas with five other communities who followed suit and became Habitat partners as well,” said Andy Bowler, Habitat President/CEO.
“We are incredibly proud of the partnership we have with the Moorings community. For 18 years, the Moorings have faithfully supported families through partnership with Indian River Habitat for Humanity. What began many years ago with two volunteers has grown and become a community-wide commitment that includes giving and support for the annual Moorings Habitat Classic.”
Through contributions totaling more than $3 million, Moorings residents have provided the funding and volunteers to build 56 Habitat homes and make 38 home repairs, and have also funded $100,000 toward scholarship programs.
“The Moorings have helped give a hand up to hard-working families whose willingness to do their part has enabled them to become Habitat homeowners,” said Bowler. “Neither we nor the 56 Habitat families whose lives have been changed and improved by the Moorings take this support for granted. We are truly grateful.”
