Richard (Dick) Maier Stern, 90, Vero Beach

Richard “Dick” Maier Stern, 90, of Vero Beach passed away Oct. 25, 2016.

He is survived by his brother Laurence Sterne; three children, Daniel Richard Stern, Thomas Fraser Stern and Laura Lelia Stern; and many grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife Lelia Fraser Stern, father Alfred Stern, and mother Rose Maier Stern and sister Doris Stern Cory.

Stern was born Aug. 30, 1926, in Pittsburgh, Pa., grew up during the Great Depression and learned the value of hard work and living within a strict budget. His most current residence was at 940 22nd Place, Vero Beach, until the passing of his wife of 69 years, Lelia Elizabeth (Bettie) Fraser Stern on Aug. 16, 2016.

During his life, Stern served honorably in the United States Navy during WWII as a communications specialist aboard the light cruisers USS Quincy and USS Santa Fe. He appreciated well made furniture and made a living as a furniture salesman for Pigskin Davis in Tulsa, Okla., Henshaw’s Furniture in Levittown, N.Y. and his last place of employment, Foley’s Department Store in Houston, Texas where he retired after more than 30 years of service.

He loved bowling with his friends and was active in many leagues. He taught his children to love many sports; but in particular he loved baseball. He loved the idea that the Chicago Cubs had earned a spot in this year’s World Series and dearly would have loved enjoying this event with them.

Klein Funeral Home, Cy-Fair is handling the cremation. There will be no formal memorial service, however a private service will be held for immediate family.
