INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office is holding “Operation Medicine Cabinet,” a pharmaceutical take-back program that promotes safe and clean environments for children by removing old, unused prescriptions from circulation.
The event will take place on Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Since 2010 this program has collected a total of 4,823,251 pounds (2,411 tons) of prescription medications from members of the public at more than 5,683 locations manned by state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies that partnered with the Drug Enforcement Agency on the event.
When added to the collections from the DEA’s previous take-back events, more than 3.4 million pounds of prescriptions medications have been removed from circulation.
The public should bring unused or expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medication to one of the locations listed for proper disposal. Any useful medication should be locked up and kept away from children and teens.
Do not flush medication down the toilet – it is a danger to the environment. Do not bring needles or other sharp objects to disposal sites, they cannot be accepted. Instead, take sharps to the Health Department at 1900 27th St., Vero Beach.
