Dorothy “Dottie” Hindert, 94, of Vero Beach passed away at Indian River Medical Center on Oct. 9, 2016.
She is survived by her son J. Randal “Randy” Hindert (Paula); her brother Millard Hatcher (Joann); two granddaughters, Tara Thomas (Brett) and Lacey Profeta; great-grandchildren Pippa Thomas, Roman Thomas; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by husband Jim in 1972, and sisters Bess Walton, Sally O’Dell, and brother L. Duane Hatcher.
She was born in New Albany, Ind., on Jan. 14, 1922, the daughter of Ralph G and Pearl Hatcher.
Her family moved to Peoria, Ill., where she met and married Jim Hindert three months prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. They both spent a four year tour in Hawaii with Special Service during the war.
Hindert and her family moved to Vero Beach in 1954 and opened A&W drive-in restaurants in Vero and later in Fort Pierce. In 1966 she and Jim opened the Petite Shoe Salon in Sexton Plaza.
Upon retirement in 1987 she devoted time to travel and volunteering. Her volunteering included various activities at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, including docent in the gallery. She also devoted many hours at the Harbor Branch.
She spent more than 20 years as a VNA Hospice volunteer, serving many roles including serving on the board of directors. She can be remembered for her recitation of the poem used in the Hospice Remembrances services. She was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from VNA in 2015.
She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Community Committee of the Vero Beach Museum of Art.
