SHELTERS: Pet center closed, others could close soon

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Pet Friendly Shelter located at Liberty Magnet School is now closed and no longer accepting anyone else.

Anyone still wishing to shelter with pets should contact the Indian River County Emergency Operations Center Hotline at (772) 226-4000 for information on how to proceed.

If you still plan to evacuate to a shelter, the time to leave is now. As the storm winds strengthen, the shelters will close their doors as opening them will compromise the integrity of the buildings. Please get to a shelter or other safe place now.

Authorities are urging people to remember that emergency shelters are a last resort for those who have nowhere to go. If you have an alternative, we ask that you use those before entering an emergency shelter.

In most cases, it would be safe, and smart, to bring all components or your Emergency Kit to the shelter. Remember, this kit should include daily necessities, medications and other supplies that will help you survive an emergency situation and potentially live on your own for at least three days.
