Gun recovered at county elementary school

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A handgun has been recovered at an elementary school.

The gun was recovered at Treasure Coast Elementary school, according to the Indian River County School District. It was in a 7-year-old student’s possession. One of the child’s parents is a corrections deputy with the Indian River County Jail, the Sheriff’s Office said. It was a civilian .38 caliber pistol. It was loaded.

“The student was unaware that they were in possession of the handgun,” said Schools Public Information Officer Flynn Fidgeon in a press release. Staff was notified immediately when it was discovered.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and the student’s parents were contacted and an investigation is being conducted by the Sheriff’s Office.

“(The student) was kind of freaked out,” said Indian River County Sheriff’s Spokesman Lt. Eric Flowers. Once the weapon was discovered, the student told their teacher at the school.

Charges could be brought against the gun owner, according to authorities, who are working with the State Attorney’s Office. The investigation is ongoing.
