Mary Laing Chames, 94, Vero Beach

Mary Laing Chames, 94, of Vero Beach, passed away peacefully at Indian River Medical Center on Aug. 23, 2016.

She is survived by the many friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness and thoughtful friendship over the years.

She was preceded in death by her husband George W. Chames.

Chames was born Jan. 24, 1922, in Chicago, Ill., to Kenneth and Florence Laing.

She attended Carleton College and graduated from Northwestern University in 1943 with a degree in English. She married George in 1965 in Chicago, Ill. In 1988, they moved to Vero Beach.

She was a dedicated volunteer who gave back in every community where they lived. She is a past president of the John’s Island Community Service League and until recently continued to volunteer at The Tambourine Resale Shop and The Humane Society. She was an adventurous soul, skydiving for the first time at age 90, a champion skeet shooter, big game hunter, pilot, snow skier, world traveler, golfer, and bridge player.

While she requested there not be a memorial service, friends will be gathering on Monday, Sept. 26, 2016 at 4 p.m. at the Oak Harbor Club House to celebrate her life.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to First Church of Christ Science in Vero Beach, FL or Humane Society of Indian River County.
