Fighting Indians bask in Media Day

VERO BEACH — Vero Beach High School introduced its varsity football team to the media Thursday. Players and coaches were photographed and interviewed by members of the media at the Citrus Bowl.

“It’s like we’re celebrities out here,” said senior quarterback Mike Dean. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Head coach Lenny Jankowski created media day as a way to let the players become comfortable answering questions and rewarding their hard work.

“We have a great bunch of kids and they deserve something special,” Jankowski said. Everyone gets excited about it and we’re able to get a lot of the preseason stuff done like team shots and individual shots.”

Vero Beach has also added several new dimensions for the fans on game nights, including a new Jumbotron with a state-of-the-art sound system, new stands for the home crowd, and new logos for the players’ helmets.

“We are one of the only high schools in the area to have a media day and all of this great stuff for our fans,” said senior offensive lineman Harrison Wood. “But it’s all about coming together as a team and winning on Friday night.”

Vero plays its first game of the 2016 season Aug. 19 against Heritage at the Citrus Bowl.
