FELLSMERE – Two wildfires caused by lightning Friday were suppressed by Indian River County Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service.
The agencies report they will monitor the wildfires overnight and return to mop up the areas in the morning, ensuring both wildfires are contained.
“The wildfire north of CR512 was producing a fair amount of smoke that could impede visibility on I-95,” said Forest Area Supervisor Trevor Taylor with the Florida Forest Service. “We notified the Florida Highway Patrol and we are asking drivers to please drive slow with their low beam headlights on when driving in this area.”
The second wildfire was on 58th Avenue off of 65th Street.
Fire officials were able to identify the trees where the lightning hit.
