INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A Fort Pierce man with an outstanding warrant for robbery now faces a charge of assaulting a police dog.
On Wednesday, around 6 p.m. in the 4500 block of 81st Street, Chad Carter, 45, was found to be in a residence at 4545 81st St., according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
Carter was seen walking out another door as residents said they wanted to “remove an aggressive dog” before authorities entered the apartment, according to the report.
Carter was ordered to stop and show his hands, whereupon he ran back into the house, according to authorities, before running out another door. Authorities lost track of him between the mobile homes.
Later in the pursuit, K-9 deputies arrived, according to the Sheriff’s Office. They tracked Carter into a wooded area where, during the apprehension, the dog got hold of the suspect.
During the bite Carter grabbed the dog’s snout and aggressively tried to rip its jaws off of him in an attempt to get away. Carter later said he fled from the apartment and if he got away he would “enjoy a few more days of freedom,” the report said.
Carter is currently incarcerated at the Indian River County Jail in lieu of $6,000 bond. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest without violence.
