Space Coast Symphony Orchestra bends to ‘Russian Masters’ July 24

VERO BEACH — The compositions of three Russian Masters will be featured in the first masterworks concert of the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-17 performing season at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, at the Community Church of Vero Beach.

Led by conductor Aaron T. Collins, the orchestra will bring to life emotionally intense works by Alexander Borodin, Sergey Rachmaninoff and Igor Stravinsky; three Russian Masters who communicated joy, pain and hope from the age of gilded Russian aristocracy up to 20th century modernity.

The program opens with the soaring melodies of Borodin’s popular “Polovtsian Dances” from the opera Prince Igor. Next, Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead evokes mystery and reverence, depicting the ghostly ferryman of Greek mythology rowing the souls of the departed. Stravinsky’s colorful ballet, Petrushka, concludes the program with the story of a mischievous character of Russian folk puppetry known since the 17th century.

Tickets are $20 in advance and are available through the orchestra website at or at Marine Bank & Trust (beachside and mainland branches). The concert is free for those aged 18 and under or with a student ID. Tickets at the door are $25. Call toll free to (855) 252-7276 for more information.

Space Coast Symphony Orchestra Conductor and Artistic Director Aaron T. Collins is the recipient of the Richard A. Stark Award for cultural leadership from the Cultural Council of Indian River County. For Collins, Russian Masters is the perfect opening masterworks concert for the new season.

“Russian composers have always known how to stir the soul,” said Collins. “The works by Borodin, Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky are all uniquely different from one another, yet all have the emotional intensity that is quintessentially Russian.”
