County to have its own Honorary Poet Laureate

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The County Commission likes the idea of a Poet Laureate for Indian River County, a proposal presented by Nancy Offutt of the Laura Riding Jackson Foundation.

Jackson, a poet, lived in Wabasso from 1943 until her death in 1991.

The Foundation had asked that it be designated as the organization that would make the official recommendation to the County as to who would be named to the honorary, 4-year position, and, in fact, already has a local poet in mind.

However, citing “poetic justice,” the Commission wants other appropriate local entities, such as the Cultural Council, to also have input regarding the recommendation, and will take action on the proposal at future meeting.
