Donald L. Penny, 91, of Vero Beach, Andover, Mass. and West Covehead, PEI, Canada, passed away at home on June 30, 2016.
He was the loving husband of 67 years to his beloved wife Marjorie Coles Penny and father to Jacqueline Coles Penny and Bradford D. Penny (Linda).
Penny was born on Aug. 3, 1924 in Haddon Heights, N.J. to Gregory L and Minerva G. Penny. The family moved to “The Beautiful Bronx” where he grew up the youngest of five children: Edward, Martin, Gordon, and Phyllis. He served in WW2 with the Seabees in the South Pacific. In May of 2015, he flew with fellow veterans on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. That celebration brought pride and pleasure.
He married Marjorie Coles, the love of his life, in 1948.They lived in Andover, Mass. where he was president of the Andover Racquets Club. In his younger years he was a top tennis and squash player and continued to play tennis into his 90s.
Penny worked for Perini Corp where all the young engineers came under his training and went on to Modern Continental where they held 10 of the 13 contacts on Boston’s “Big Dig,” considered a major engineering feat. It was complimentary that several of his former engineers kept in touch, calling for advice and giving him a plaque dedicated to “The Hall-of-Famer.”
He and Marjorie retired to Vero Beach where he was a member of the John’s Island Club for 38 years. He was a member of Trinity Church in Vero.
This kind and thoughtful man, adoring husband and most loving father will be greatly missed by all lucky enough to have known him.
A memorial service will be held in the fall.
