Fun, fireworks highlight Fourth festivities

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — There’s no shortage of fun things to do this Fourth of July holiday weekend – starting Saturday morning and concluding Monday evening.

The cities of Vero Beach and Sebastian will host their own respective fireworks shows and festivities, while the Vero Beach Book Center will get the weekend kicked off with a blast of its own – the annual Bubble Wrap Explosion.

The book store, located at 392 21st Street (Miracle Mile), Vero Beach, will hold its Patriotic Party and Bubble Wrap Explosion starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 2.

Miss Erin will read several patriotic-themed stories, lead children in songs and even a parade around the store. Kids also will get to create a patriotic craft just before the main event – the Bubble Wrap Explosion.

Sebastian’s Freedom Festival gets an early start Monday with a 5K Run/Walk at 7 a.m. The Compete to Defeat run/walk starts at Riverview Park and heads north on Indian River Drive.

At 8 a.m., Opening Ceremonies will be held at the Flag Pole at Veterans Memorial Park inside Riverview Park. The Fourth of July Parade gets started at 8:30 a.m. coming from the Sebastian Community Center south on Indian River Drive to Riverview Park – arrive early to get a spot along the route.

Riverview Park itself will be bustling with activities and festivities all day leading up to the fireworks show, which will start shortly after sunset. Fireworks can be seen from the event field at Riverview Park, located on the east side of Indian River Drive, south of Mulligan’s.

Vero Beach’s festivities include a Concert in the Park and Fireworks show starting at 4 p.m. at Riverside Park. The park is located at 3001 Riverside Park Dr. on the barrier island.

There will be activities for children as well as food for sale. Beer and wine, too, will be available.

The event runs from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and includes a concert of five musicians before the fireworks. The fireworks show is expected to last 20 to 25 minutes and will be synchronized to music on 93.7 FM WGYL.
