INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Commissioner Tim Zorc thinks the County is losing potential income in disposing of surplus property. He suggested a method other than the current sealed-bid process be considered.
He asked the Commission to consider a local ordinance similar to that of Citrus County, which provides “a broader scope of options” in disposing of surplus properties.
Zorc noted that the City of Vero Beach has put a commercial real estate sign on its surplus property next to Dodgertown, and wondered whether the county might do the same. Commissioner Peter O’Bryan suggested going to the Realtors Association rather than trying to choose an individual Realtor.
Commissioner Wesley Davis agreed the County is losing money and suggested an auction would be the best way to “level the playing field for potential buyers.”
Davis is an auctioneer.
Commissioner Joe Flescher disagreed, noting most counties use the sealed-bid process, which to him, seemed “neat and clean.”
The Commission asked staff to review Citrus County’s model and the Board’s comments and come back with suggestions.
