INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Two juveniles were taken to the hospital and another dozen sustained minor scrapes and scratches when the loft they were partying on collapsed inside an old barn south of Vero Beach.
The two who were taken to the hospital sustained non-life threatening injuries and are expected to be treated and released, Sheriff Deryl Loar told VeroNews.com early Saturday morning. The dozen or so others who were taking part in the graduation party suffered scrapes and scratches, including bloody knees.
According to Sheriff Loar, authorities responded to a graduation party located in the 900 block of 58th Avenue shortly after midnight. Alcohol was involved.
He said too many party-goers were on the old barn loft when it collapsed 12 feet onto air conditioning equipment below. The collapse trapped a few people underneath. They have since been extricated.
The Sheriff’s Office coordinated an effort to return party-goers to their parents. He said no students have yet been arrested and it is unclear if any will.
However, the homeowners have been issued a criminal summons on the charge of open house party. The homeowners are Kelly and Linda Greene, Sheriff Loar said. They were not arrested and booked into the county jail. Instead, they received a Notice to Appear in court.
