Paying Tribute: Indian River County remembers the fallen

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Thousands gathered throughout Indian River County Monday morning to pay tribute to the military men and women who fell in the line of service to our country.

Services were held in Vero Beach, Sebastian and Fellsmere.

The crowd gathered in Sebastian at the Veterans Memorial at Riverview Park was described as the “largest ever” while nearly 2,000 attended the Vero Beach ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary.

The event was hosted by the Veterans Council of Indian River County. Guest speakers were Jamie Owens, wife of late Navy Seaman Ronald Scott Owens, a Vero resident who was killed on the USS Cole attack and Lieutenant General William Welser III USAF (Ret.), who heads the Space Coast Honor Flight.

Many were noticeably moved by the ceremony as Army Staff Sergeant John Melia placed a wreath at one of the memorial plaques which honors local men who have died while serving in the United States military during times of conflict and war.
