Dr. John Cowling Maddox Jr., 82, Vero Beach

Dr. John Cowling Maddox Jr., 82, of Vero Beach, passed away on May 6, 2016, at his home.

He is survived by his dear wife of 47 years, Lori Rains Maddox; sons John (Molly) and James (Marilyn); daughter Mary Currie (Scott); step-daughter Lisa DeGroot (John); step-son Michael Landers (Shawn Marie); 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and cousins.

Maddox was born in New York, N.Y., and only child to the late John C. and Gwendolyn Bennison Maddox. He attended Baldwin High School in Birmingham, Mich., and pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan before entering the University of Michigan Dental School.

He served for two years in the US Army at the rank of Captain during which time he was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. He established a well-respected General Dentistry practice in Birmingham, Mich., from which he retired after 38 years. He came to retire in Indian River Shores in 1999.

He was a life member of the Orchard Lake Country Club in Michigan, a member of the John’s Island Club and the Vero Beach Yacht Club in Florida, a past member of The 200 Hundred Club, Michigan Dental Society, Oakland County Dental Society, a board member of the Birmingham Rotary Club, Association board member and was a lifetime member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association.

Maddox dearly loved his children, stepchildren, grandchildren, Lori and their friends as well as fishing in any pond, lake or stream. He would travel far and wide for a fishing spot. He so enjoyed golfing and fishing with Lori and his pals, gardening and his greenhouse orchids, high school friends, his Michigan Sigma Chi pledge class, especially his “brother” Lance Minor. It was pure joy to him to travel around the world with his beloved Lori.

He volunteered his services to make mouth guards for the Cranbrook School football team for years. He enjoyed volunteering for Rotary events, the Environmental Learning Center and Shining Light Farm.
