Joseph Bernard Egan III, 77, Vero Beach

Joseph Bernard “JB” Egan III, 77, of Vero Beach, passed away in Mobile, Ala., after attending his 55th college reunion at Spring Hill College.

He was born in Plainfield, N.J., and moved with his family to Vero Beach in the late 1940’s. His family was a citrus family. He grew up in McAnsh Park and attended St. Helens grade school.

Egan graduated from St. Anastasia/John Carroll High School (valedictorian). He met his wife Karen in 1961 and they were married in 1963. They have four children: Mary Elaine Lugris (Erik), Diane Parentela (Vinnie), Dan, and Laura Edholm (John). He also had four grandsons, Tyler, Dylan, Ryan and AJ. He is also survived by his sister Margaret Brooks (Charles) as well as his brother Robert (Suzanne).

He served his country for two years as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army. He spent his career working for Sexton, Inc. at Oslo Citrus Growers as the firm’s accountant. He got tremendous satisfaction from community service.

The Sexton family gave him the freedom to pursue his love of community service of which he took full advantage. Notable achievements include: Indian River County Housing Authority Board, United Way Campaign Chairman – twice, Chamber of Commerce President, Indian River County Bi-Centennial Celebration, Indian River Citrus League Budget Committee Chairman, McKee Botanical Gardens Restoration Project Member, Indian River Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, Chairman of Board, Vero Beach Country Club President & Treasurer, Kiwanis Club 30 year member, President, Secretary & Treasurer, St. Helen’s Harvest Festival 50 year Involvement, St. Helen’s Church Parish Council member, Knights of Columbus Grand Knight, Altar Server Co-Coordinator at St. Helen’s Church for more than 700 children and 40 years, and the Alma Lee Loy Community Service Award Recipient 2015.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to St. Helen Catholic Church, 2050 Vero Beach Ave., Vero Beach, FL 32960, the United Way of Indian River County, 1836 14th Ave, Vero Beach, FL 32960 or to the Class of 1961 Spring Hill College Endowment Fund, 400 Dauphin St, Mobile, AL 36608 in memory of Joseph Bernard Egan III.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, May 9, 2015 at St. Helen Catholic Church with a Prayer Service beginning at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m., Tuesday, May 10, 2015 at St. Helen Catholic Church followed by interment in Crestlawn Cemetery, Vero Beach.
