Sudden end to VBHS 10-year title reign

JUPITER — A decade of dominance is over. At least for one year.

The Vero Beach High School girls lacrosse team — winners of an unreal 10 straight state titles — saw their super streak come to a close in heartbreaking fashion yesterday, falling to Bartram Trail, 8-7, at Jupiter High School.

The quest for title No. 11 looked with Vero Beach’s grasp late in regulation. The Lady Indians trailed the Bears, 7-6, but with just under two minutes to play sophomore Sydney Bracken scored to send the thrilling contest into sudden-death overtime.

Vero Beach controlled the draw to start the overtime session, but could not convert the possession into a game-winning goal.

Bartram Trail scored with only seven seconds to go in the first overtime period to capture the 2016 state title.
