Grand Harbor Community Outreach Program aids Veterans Helping Veterans Project

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Representative Tom McGinnis of the Grand Harbor Community Outreach Program presented the Veterans Council of Indian River County a check for $7,000 at the Council’s April 6 meeting.

“We’re very happy to give you this check to help Gifford veterans and their families! We wish you luck with the project,” McGinnis said.

Accepting the check was Curtis Paulisin, first vice president of the Veterans Council and Leon Barnwell, Commander, Gifford American Legion Post 181.

Veterans Helping Veterans Project is a joint effort between the Veterans Council and American Legion Post 181 and will address Gifford community needs by matching unemployed Gifford veterans with veteran residents who require improvements in their homes.

The home improvement work will be performed for qualified residents who find it difficult or impossible to do or afford by themselves. Vice president Paulisin said, “Support such as this grant from the generous Grand Harbor Community will make a meaningful and immediate difference in the lives of selected Gifford veterans and their families.”

The Grand Harbor Community Outreach Program is a nonprofit and member-driven organization engaged in fundraising to address the unmet needs of groups and individuals in the areas of health, education, and human services in Indian River County.

Doug Sweeny, GHCOP vice president of philanthropy said “We have always been very eager to serve the Gifford community and to support veterans who have sacrificed so much for our country.”

The Veterans Council of Indian River County assists local veterans and their families by providing transportation to VA medical facilities, helping qualified veterans with emergency basic living expenses, and providing support for veterans seeking employment. In addition, the Council hosts military ceremonies, such as this year’s Memorial Day observance on Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary with keynote speaker Lt. Gen. William Wesler, USAF, Retired.
