School District launches virtual school for high school students

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The School District of Indian River County has partnered with Florida Virtual School to develop and launch its own virtual school called Indian River Virtual (IR Virtual).

IR Virtual is a new, free option for county high school students. Parents can begin enrolling their students in the one of a kind virtual school today with just a phone call.

The virtual school is 100-percent free.

“This is a first of its kind for students in our area. We’re going to have local teachers with

local offices, providing virtual education which also fulfills online graduation requirement,” said Dr. Arnett, director of Career and Technical Education.

IR Virtual will offer students and parents all the convenience that comes with students taking classes online, but will feature benefits that other virtual schools cannot offer.

Students who are enrolled with IR Virtual will have access to student support services, like ESOL and ESE support, in virtual and in-person settings. IR Virtual students will also have the option to participate in sports, electives, and career technical training offered at

traditional district schools. Finally, IR Virtual students can transfer back to the their zoned school at anytime without a waiting period.
