INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River Genealogical Society (IRGS) is pleased to announce that Diahan Southard from Genealogy Gems will be the program speaker at the regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 12.
This lecture is to be held at the Indian River County Main Library, 1600 21st Street, Vero Beach. The business meeting convenes at 9:30 a.m., followed by light refreshments and the program. This meeting is free and open to the public.
Southard comes to IRGS with 16 years of experience in the genetic genealogy industry. She holds a degree in Microbiology which has qualified her to instruct all levels of interest.
She is the DNA guide at Genealogy Gems; she has worked with the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation and has been in the genetic genealogy industry since it became an industry. Southard is also the author of DNA Guides “Getting Started: Genetics for Genealogists” and “Y Chromosome DNA for Genealogists.”
Southard will leave attendees feeling enlightened and motivated as she is upbeat and full of energy. She has a passion for genetic genealogy, a genuine love for people and a gift for making the technical understandable.
In this back to basics lecture she will cover the three main kinds of DNA testing or genealogy: mtDNA, YDNA and autosomal DNA. She will cover the strengths and weaknesses of each; she will talk about who should be tested and with which company.
This is the lecture promises to be great for people who are new to genealogy, and those thinking of giving up on genetic genealogy, thinking they will never understand it. The Genealogical Society believes attendees will find out they understand more than they think, and will be able to start putting Southard’s advice to use immediately
