Richard T. “Dick” Bueschel, 83, of Vero Beach, passed away on March 24, 2016, at his home.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mildred Ann (Sleeper) Bueschel, of Vero Beach; his sister Jan Weaver of Durham, N.C.; his son Thomas and (Lyn) of Bow N.H.; his daughter Susan of Fairfax, Va.; and his granddaughter Stephanie of New York, N.Y.
Bueschel was born on Feb. 22, 1933, to Richard T. Bueschel, Sr. and his wife Sophia (Stubbe) Bueschel, in Plainfield N.J. He split his time growing up between Plainfield and Daytona Beach, Fla., where he could often be found driving (way too fast) on the famed Daytona Beach.
After high school he headed north to Hanover, N.H., where he attended Dartmouth College and met and married his wife, Mildred (Mil). After graduation in 1955, Bueschel joined the Air Force where he entered flight training school in Pensacola, Fla., and qualified to fly the F-86 jet fighter in the final days of the Korean War.
Upon discharge from the Air Force in 1961 with the rank of major, he joined the Honeywell Corporation in Massachusetts becoming manager of their technical divisions, 1961-1963, manager of finance systems, 1963-1964, and director of internal data processing, 1964-1966. He also found time to obtain his MBA at Northeastern University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating with honors in 1964.
In 1966, Bueschel left Honeywell to co-found Time Share Corporation, Hanover, N.H., a company pioneering in the brand new field of computers. Over the next several years he also co-founded Computer Environments Corp., an education service provider, DataMarket Inc., an integrator and developer of financial systems, and TSC, a linguistic and educational software company. He was truly a pioneer in the computer industry.
Bueschel was also a prolific writer authoring several books (with others) including: “Commercial Time Sharing Systems,” “Electronic Data Processing and Personnel,” and contributed many articles to professional journals.
In 1984 he sold Time Share to Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston joining the Company as Senior Vice President for technology. During his tenure there he was also appointed to the President’s Task force on Educational technology, serving from 1984 to 1986.
Upon his retirement from Houghton Mifflin in 1988, Bueschel founded Northern Equities, Inc., an investment and management firm in Hanover, N.H. He was also involved with developing numerous high tech companies on both the east and west coast.
He was the Chairman of the Board of Infodata Systems Inc. from 1993 and served as acting Chief Executive Officer from 1997 to 1998. He was also instrumental in the development and growth of several start-up companies including service as the Chairman of the Board of Communications Management Systems, Inc., a telecommunications software company; a director of Iron Speed, Inc., a software tools company; and a director of Study.Net Corporation, a developer of internet-based education software.
When Bueschel wasn’t busy building companies, he loved to travel. For 20 years he and his wife split their time between homes in Hanover, N.H. and Bermuda. Always curious, he loved seeing new places and he managed to be there at interesting times. He was in Berlin during the dismantling of the Berlin wall and Russia when the communist government collapsed. The source of his travel bug may have been genetic as his mother Sophia had visited more than 130 countries in her lifetime of travels. In his later years, Bueschel was busy following in her footsteps.
Eventually the cold of New Hampshire and dampness of Bermuda necessitated a change to a warmer climate and in 2002 he and Mil settled in Vero Beach where they designed and built a wonderful home, just steps from the ocean.
