TALLAHASSEE – Gov. Rick Scott recognized two Indian River County deputies who recently saved a woman from a burning vehicle, giving them the Medal of Heroism.
“I am incredibly proud of the bravery of Deputy Robert Sunkel and Deputy Linda Nolan to rescue a woman from a burning car and save her life,” Gov. Scott said. “Their quick reaction to the life-threatening situation demonstrates tremendous courage. I’m also honored to recognize FWC Officer David Brady for his quick response and awareness during a dangerous exchange while on patrol. I applaud the bravery and selflessness of these officers to protect families in their community.”
Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar attended the recognition.
“We are grateful that Governor Scott took time out of his cabinet meeting to recognize the heroic efforts of Deputies Sunkel and Nolan,” Sheriff Loar said. “Everyone at the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office is proud of them.”
On March 23, 2016, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Dispatch responded to the collision of a septic tanker truck and small vehicle. Following the incident, the car and truck were immediately engulfed in flames with a woman trapped inside the vehicle.
Indian River Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Sunkel arrived quickly to the dangerous scene and broke into the window of the car to rescue the woman.
Deputy Linda Nolan arrived shortly after and used a fire extinguisher to reduce the flames. Together, Deputies Sunkel and Nolan were able to pull the woman out of the vehicle and get her to safety.
She sustained treatable burns to her hands and was airlifted to the hospital.
